Artist Statement
I make utilitarian pottery for everyday use in the home.
Every pot I make is made by hand with the guiding principles of what David Pye calls, “workmanship of risk” where the quality of the result is determined by my skill, judgement, and the care I put into the work during the making process. My continual endeavor is to be a better craftsman and that motivates me to keep creating with a discerning eye for quality. This is evident in several ways including the physical and visual weight of the pot, how a lid rests in the gallery, the comfort of a handle, the curve inside of a bowl, as well as the application of surface decoration and glazes. Although precision and control are important to the quality of my work, I achieve greater diversity with elements of rough workmanship and varying degrees of regulation from freehand brush strokes to using ribs for curves and stamps for textures. I embrace the imperfections inherent in work done by hand.
